South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa. Since the fall of apartheid, South Africa has improved in the political, social and economic realms including the realization of children’s rights. However, poverty and the rise of HIV/ AIDS continue to undermine much of the social progress achieved since the end of apartheid.
Poverty and HIV/AIDS lead to maternal and child mortality, as well as gender-based and child-targeting violence and abuse in South Africa. It is estimated that there are over 2.5 million orphaned children in South Africa. Unfortunately, orphans are more vulnerable to violence than children living with parents and caregivers.
